Meet Olli

Olli

Seven years old. Four hundred questions a day.

Olli has chestnut-brown hair that has never once done as it was told, freckles across the bridge of his nose, and a yellow hoodie he would happily wear to a wedding. He is seven, which is exactly the age where the world stops being something that happens to you and starts being something you can go and look at.

He is curious in the specific, exhausting, wonderful way that seven-year-olds are curious — which is to say he does not want the answer so much as he wants to find it himself, and he will take the long route to get there.

His courage is unreliable in an entirely normal way. He is rarely brave beforehand. He is frequently brave about nine seconds after the thing has already started, which as anyone who has taught a child to ride a bike will tell you, is the only kind of brave that counts.

He is not good at waiting. He is not good at tidying. He is extremely good at noticing the one interesting thing that everybody else walked straight past.
